Basic Needs Ministry - Miscellaneous Community Resources

Miscellaneous resources may have needs based requirements.

Computers

  1. Computers for Kids through Smithfield-Selma Chamber of Commerce, Johnston County Schools, Johnston Community College, and the Johnston County Education Foundation provides donated and refurbed computers through Selma Middle and Smithfield Middle School.
  2. Kramden Institute, Inc., 919-638-6200. - Upgrades donated working computers for free distribution to school children.
  3. Purple Elephant, www.purpleelephant.org. Accepts donated computers, refurbishes them, adds software, and makes them available to people who could not afford a new computer.

Fans

  1. Helping Hand Mission, 623 Rock Quarry Rd., Raleigh; 919-829-8048. Tries to provide hundreds of fans annually.

Firewood

  1. Warmth for Wake; 919-212-7000. Firewood in exchange for donation.

Heaters

  1. Western Wake Crisis Ministry, 103 1/2 East Chatham St., Apex, NC 27502; 919-362-0657. 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Monday-Thursday. Serves residents of Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, New Hill and Friendship, or residents in other areas of Wake County with a referral from another agency. Provides food; financial assistance to rent, utilities, heating fuel, medical expenses, and repairs; food baskets during the holidays; dental care items, fans, smoke detectors, new electric space heaters and similar items.  

Perms for Ladies

  1. Johnston Community College-Cosmetology - 919-209-2078. $5 perms for the public. Tues-Thurs 9:30 a.m.-Noon or Tues-Wed 5:30-7 p.m.

School Supplies Wake County

  1. School Buddies (WCHS Community Initiatives), 220 Swinburne St., Raleigh; 919-212-7083 or 919-212-7084. Collections in 2006 at Cary Towne Center, Triangle Town Center, or the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wake County (8-5). Provides free school supplies for children enrolled in Wake Social Services programs.

Multi-County

  1. Communities in Schools (CIS), a nonprofit, collects school supplies statewide with the help of major television station promotions and businesses. All children enrolled in CIS programs are automatically eligible for the supplies. For participation as a business call 919-832-2700.   2. Salvation Army locations are collecting school supplies for distribution through August 31.
